OFFICIAL RULES
LISA MCPHERSON TRUST
YEAR 2000 LITERATI CONTEST
The only official rules for this contest will be those appearing here at the Web site of the Lisa McPherson Trust (LMT). The LMT or others may distribute notices or these rules to other locations but should include the URL for this page which is http://www.lisamcpherson.org/LMT/literaticontest/contest2000/rules2000.html. If there is any discrepancy or difference between these rules and those cited elsewhere, the rules appearing at this site take precedence.
The topic for the Year 2000 contest is "Scientology: Control, Freedom & Responsibility."
The essay
should analyze how control, freedom and responsibility operate together
or clash within the organization and how these interface with the
non-Scientology world. How that is done or presented is up to the essayist. (Click here for further discussion.)The essayist is free to chose their own title for the piece.
1. The essay must be an original piece of writing. It cannot have appeared
anywhere else.
2. It must be submitted in English, from 7,500-15,000 words,
with correct spelling and acceptable grammar and syntax. (Those for whom English ia a second language will be given special consideration.)
3. It must be insightful and thought provoking, and it must provide some
practical resolution or approach to the Scientology issue by integrating the
perspectives of both sides. Personal (first-person) stories are accepted.
4. Any quoting in the essay of any other material must be within the Fair
Use doctrine of the Copyright Law. Sources should be properly cited and can be done in footnote form or in a bibliography or in the text.
5. Only email entries can be accepted. Entries should be sent as email text only and not as an attachment. The essay should be emailed to the following address:
literati-contest@lisatrust.net
under the subject heading:
"2000 LMT
Literati
entry (entrant's name.)"
6. Contrary to an earlier announcement, entries accepted for consideration will not be posted
to the LMT Web site for open review before the contest closes and the decision
of the judges. It was determined this would be best for entries, those who have
not yet entered and the judges who must make their own decision. This does not
change any other rules or requirements.
7. (This rule is now null and empty. It dealt with HMTL/Web coding and is no
longer applicable.)
8. There will be four
judges: Bob Minton, Stacy Brooks, Karin Case and Graham Berry. The decision
of
the judges will be final.
9. Winners will be determined by the same panel of judges and the decision of the judges will be final.
10. Prizes will be:
First place - $7,000
Second place - $2,000
Third place - $1,000.
Awards and places are to be determined
by the judges and their decision is final.
11. Qualifying entrants grant the Lisa McPherson Trust the use of the essay
at the LMT Web site. Entrants grant the LMT the right to republish the material at
the discretion of the LMT for two years, with full credit to the entrant. At that time, the right devolve back to the entrant. The entrant retains all other rights.
12. There is no entry fee. Entrants should also submit their name, address and phone number. Address and phone number will not appear at the Web site.
13. Employees and family of LMT employees or anyone associated with this contest are ineligible for first through third place and cash prizes but may enter essays for recognition and posting to the site.
14. The contest closes at 12:00 noon Eastern Standard Time in the United
States on November 30, 2000. Any entries received after that time cannot be
accepted.
15. Winners will be announced at a dinner to be held by the LMT in
Clearwater,
Florida, on Saturday evening, December 2, 2000. Winners will be notified by
phone and email as soon as possible following the announcement.
Good luck to everyone!
