INTERNATIONAL PROTEST AGAINST SCIENTOLOGY

MARCH 13,14 1998 - IN LOS ANGELES AND AROUND THE WORLD

* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *

The fourth international peaceful demonstration against the Church of Scientology will be held on March 13th and 14th 1998 in Los Angeles, Toronto, Washington DC and other cities around the world. The Los Angeles protest (expected to draw 30-50 picketers) will be held at Scientology Celebrity Center in Hollywood on the 13th from 10am to 1pm, and on Saturday, March 14th at 6700 Hollywood Blvd from 10am to 2pm. We also plan to picket the church’s Birthday celebration of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, Friday night.

This will be the first mass protest of Scientology in Los Angeles since the mid 1980’s. In the last international picket, around 40 protesters traveled from around the world to the Church’s spiritual headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, to protest Scientology’s harsh treatment of its critics and its own members, and many sister protests were held in cities around the world, mostly organized on the internet. Critics point out the harmful and dangerous practices of the church, their exorbitant and aggressive monetary requirements, their policy of attacking anyone they consider an “enemy”, and their own incarceration of members deemed problematic to the church.

Many people have been hurt by these practices, including Lisa McPherson, a 36 year old Scientologist who died under mysterious circumstances while under the care of fellow Scientologists. “We don’t want the church’s quack medical practices killing anyone else,” said demonstrator Jeff Jacobsen. “We want the church to renounce their practices of incarceration and to stop hurting people both inside and outside their organization.” Another demonstrator, Arthur Mist, said “This is not about what Scientologists believe, this is about their actions, and how they hurt people.” Academics agree about the effects of Scientology, “[Scientology is] an organization that appears to put citizens from around the world at significant mental health and perhaps medical risk.” wrote Professor Stephen Kent, University of Alberta, in a conference in Germany last year.

This protest is dedicated to exposing the numerous false claims about L. Ron Hubbard,” the founder of Scientology. It is also to make the public aware of the dangerous actions of the Church of Scientology. [March 13 is Hubbard’s birthdate].
